The sun was out, the day was warm, and Emmeline as going to enjoy it while it lasted. After all how many gorgeous weekends did you get during the school year with no homework? Not many, especially when you were a seventh year at Hogwarts preparing for your NEWTS. So when Emmeline realized she had finished all her homework, and there was still lots of daylight left she had gone out to the grounds to soak up some sun before all her waking hours were spent hunched over her books in the library with the dust bunnies.
Yes lazily lying on the soft, springy grass practicing magic was definitely more interesting than reading about the properties of some potion ingredients. The only thing better than this would be practicing Quidditch, but Emmeline figured that since they had a practice soon anyway she would just laze around and relax while she could. At the moment she was practicing basic things, stuff she had mastered years ago, levitation, basic transfiguration, stuff like that. She wasn't putting too much effort into her magic and was just having fun messing around with simple spells that required little to no effort.
Even seventh years needed breaks sometimes, actually, in Emmeline's opinion the seventh years probably needed them more than the younger students did. Ha, the first years thought they're workload was bad, there's was nothing compared to the older students. And with the NEWTS at the end of the year, well that didn't help with the stress at all.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? NEWTS? Studying? Homework? Practicing spells? Sirius would have the bare minimum of it. Grades and school were two subjects that Sirius never worried by, especially since he usually managed to float on by. Sure, he may not have the grades that Moony and Evans but as long as he was not being called over to the side by the professors. For Sirius, that was all that mattered. He didn't need to hear how he was below the expectations professors had for him because he was a Black.
Sirius was unsure of what to do with his time, James and Moony had gone off to actually study and Peter followed them instead of Sirius. Which he was fine with, Wormtail was too...clingy. He was like a girl in that manner. Sirius had made his way out to the lawns with a few girls waving and giggling at him. It always made him laugh, younger girls who thought that having a hot boyfriend was all that they needed in life. Sirius would happily disagree and claim that relationships were not as great as they seemed to be. That being said, he could never get enough girls in life.
Sirius looked around on the lawns and found his eyes lingering on Emmeline Vance. The smile on his face turned some what mischievous--as it always did. Sirius did not quite get her, she never seemed interested in him. Actually, she didn't seem interested in anyone. Personally, Sirius did not believe that was possible. It was a school of teenagers, there were hormones, she had to take interest in someone. "Heey Vance," Sirius said, falling onto his stomach so that the two were perpendicular to each other.

With a flick of her wand Emmeline could create little birds, so that was what she was doing. There were now four little birds hopping around the grass, searching for bugs to eat. She smiled, the little birds were bright yellow and chirping quite cheerfully, completely unconcerned by Emmeline lying on the grass only a few feet away. But a sudden shadow startled did and the little birds took flight in a flurry of feathers just as Sirius Black fell onto the grass on his stomach before her. The teenager just rolled her eyes, "Black, you scared my birds away."
Emmeline didn't have a problem with Sirius, they were on the Quidditch team together, and they got along just fine, you could even say they were friends, but the fact that he annoyed Lily to no end ticked Emmeline off a little, she didn't like people bothering her friends. And of course the fact that was a known flirt didn't help her opinion of him, but she put up with him for the simple fact that he was pretty easy to get along with, his obnoxious behaviour aside. Emmeline knew she wasn't exactly a walk in the park to be friends with so she put up with other people.
And even though his constant flirting with girls was a little irritating, it was amusing at the same time. Emmeline thought it was funny how so many girls could find Sirius so charming and attractive. Then again Emmeline just didn't see how guys in general were attractive so she wasn't really one to judge. Maybe, in the world of people who liked guys he was. She just couldn't see things that way, and trying to figure out whether a guy was attractive for her was as difficult as it was for Alice to remember the password for the Common Room. So for all Emmeline knew Sirius could be the most attractive guy around, but it wasn't like it mattered to her. She was just one less girl for all the other girls to fight with over him, and really, she didn't mind.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? Sirius looked up in the direction of where the birds flew off to. He was not feeling an ounce of guilt, by now it was possible for either of them to conjure up new birds that would stick around. Eventually the previous birds would cease to exist--quicker than normal birds--all because they were a spell. He was sure that if he had chased off birds from Lily Evan's wand she have them chasing him around the school.
Sirius pulled his wand out of his back pocket and waved it in a quick motion, conjuring similar yellow canaries. "There you go Vance, and you'll know these ones are better because they came from me," he said in a charming manner. He never did understand why Vance did not take interest in him. He was Sirius Black after all; he had babe magnet written all over him. Maybe Lily was brain washing her, that had been his assumption for awhile now. It just seemed fitting, she did hang around Evans and Evans could be a bad influence sometimes.
"Not studying I see. Well, that's good, studying only causes major dilemmas with contemplating important things in life. Like morals and blah blah blah," Sirius knew he was not exactly one to say had a pure soul, and he preferred it that way. With a less than pure soul, he had experience, wisdom--or so he claimed--and of course a better idea of right and wrong. And then he also claimed to was to help make the Order of Phoenix make more sense. Words:

Emmleine knew that she could just conjure new birds to replace the ones that Sirius had chased away. She also knew that those ones would vanish soon enough, since they had been created by magic, but that didn't really matter to her. What mattered was that Sirius had scared those birds away, and she had been quite happy with them. That was the problem.
Then of course Sirius pulled out his wand and conjured up more yellow birds, nearly identical to the ones he had just scared off. Emmeline rolled her eyes at his assumption that his were better. "Black, if we all made the assumption that everything you did was better, then the war would have been lost already." She shot him a cynical smile, "In other words, I don't want your birds." Emmeline knew that Sirius thought he was all smooth with the ladies, and she figured that he probably was, with girls who actually liked guys. Emmeline also knew that Sirius had no idea she didn't like guys, because here he was flirting with her, idiot. Making assumptions was going to get him killed one of these days, most likely by Lily or Emmeline herself.
"Ah yes, and you seem to be lacking all morals when it comes to the etiquette on flirting don't you?" She said, hinting that he was out of line at the moment, though she doubted he would pick up on something like that. This was Sirius Black after all, and if her sexuality hadn't occurred to him yet, it probably wasn't about it.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? "Ah Merlin, Vance, you make it sound like we would lose against all those nasty Death Eaters. That would be no fun at all. Imagine all the nasty hate crimes against muggle borns and half bloods they'd have us do. No siree. Those won't happen as long as I'm a part of the Order that won't ever happen," Sirius smiled in a cheesy manner. He did not have such cocky views on the war; in realistic terms. In fact, he was rather unsure about what to think; and most days he did not want to imagine what would happen if the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters won in the end.
Sirius gasped in false shock, "You don't want my birds Vance? That's ashame, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there in the world who would take birds no matter who the person." Sirius was not too sure if he was even talking about birds anymore, but he was going with it in a stubborn manner. As long as Emmeline did not turn this into something dealing with Psychology, Sirius would be a happy camper. Of course, Emmeline was a girl and girls always went into deep meanings with everything everyone else did--something Sirius would never understand.
"Oh Vance don't be silly. It's a new era, girls have more freedom. If girls don't like what comes out of my mouth they can happily smack me; your friend Evans is all to aware of that. But not many smack me, so I must be doing something right," Sirius knew the reason why Evans was not interested in him; she was too use to Prongs being the one to orbit around her. Of course, she probably was not aware of that yet. Emmeline was still a puzzle to him, usually Sirius always found a way to make a girl swoon, but not her, it was rather odd to him. Words:

Sirius brought up what would happen if the Death Eaters won, something Emmeline knew as well as anyone. "Black, I am one of the muggle borns." She rolled her eyes, if he wouldn't remember that he was even dumber than he looked. Then again, boys were always dumber than they looked, it was a general rule that Emmeline had learned over the years. "No I don't want your birds, I was perfectly content with the ones I had conjured." Emmleine made a mock, shocked face, as if she couldn't believe what she had just said. She knew that Sirius wasn't used to being shot down repeatedly by a girl, but she was a unique situation, obviously.
His suggestion that she slap him made Emmeline seriously consider it, but she figured that since Lily had probably slapped him a few times already and it probably didn't have much effect. "Actually I'm trying to think up a decent hex to use on you, a little more fun that way." She wasn't kidding when she said she was trying to think up a decent hex, she actually was. A little practice for her Defense Against the Dark Arts, N.E.W.T's. After all, sometimes you needed someone to actually practice your hexes on.
Em was actually slightly amused by the way he didn't catch on to anything. It just proved her point that boys were stupid and made her case to be interested in girls stronger. Not that Emmeline was that dumb, boys IQ had nothing to do with why she didn't like them, it was just who she was. But she did like saying it was because guys were stupid, she just couldn't help herself. Not when the male population gave her so much material to work with.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? "You see, Vance, I don't take much notice to who's a pureblood and who's a muggle born. I know you're a muggle born but unlike the rest of my family; I don't care." Sirius had a rather cocky smile painted on his face, until Emmeline said she did not want his birds. In turn, that caused his smile to become a pout. "Well fine, Em, conjure some new ones. Mine come from the heart, just keep that in mind. They were made just for you."
Sirius' smile came back when Emmeline told him what she was really thinking about. Hexing him, that was nothing new and he always found humor in it. Lily Evans threatened to hex him, he was sure Snivellus had some hexes in mind, possibly even Moony wanted to hex him from time to time. Actually more than half his family wanted to hex him, well, he was positive that Bellatrix wanted to do more than just hex him--she was a nutter after all. "Vance, you're not going to hex me any time soon. Even if your best friend is Head Girl; hexing another student never looks good for the person doing the hexing. We both know this."
Sirius rolled over onto his back and looked up at the sky, "Yup Vance, there's no chance in this lifetime that you'll be hexing me. Maybe the after school life during an Order meeting, but then we'll all be 'behaving' because that's some serious stuff." Words:

"Well I'm sure most girls would love for you to conjure birds from your heart for them," Emmeline said, her voice patronizing as she rolled her eyes. "But I'm not one of them." Actually, Em was beyond being annoyed by Sirius, she was actually finding this whole thing hilarious. He was just so dense, she couldn't believe the stupidity boys just radiated. And her threaten to hex him, well that seemed to amuse him, and she knew why. He didn't take her threat seriously, he thought that she was a goody two shoes who cared about getting in trouble. Ha! As if. Em didn't care if she got in trouble, she wasn't Lily. Lily was the good one, Alice was the one who couldn't stay away from trouble in the form of boys, Nat was just insane, and Em was the overprotective troublemaker.
"I couldn't care less what looks good, I just want to see you suffer." She said with a threatening, mischievous, smile. She twirled her wand around before it came to point at him, she was seriously considering hexing him, but lowered her wand, deciding to wait a little more, this conversation was far too amusing. Then he goaded her, saying there was no chance that she would hex him. He was baiting her, almost as if he wanted to be hexed, and Em knew it. If she did hex him it would prove that she could be manipulated, but if she didn't, well then that would just prove him right. Which would be worse? That was the big question. She sighed and dropped her wand, "Sorry to break it to you Black, but you aren't worth the time it takes to hex someone."

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? Sirius frowned when Emmeline said she was not one of the girls wanting his birds. "Em, you're no fun sometimes. Give a bloke some hope once in awhile. It's like you don't even like men, you know? Not once have I seen you on the arm of some dude through out our entire school days." Not many ideas dawned on Sirius when it came to girls; just one idea alone. Well, possibly two if one was to count his fantasy of a three-some, but all knew that he would never be lucky enough.
"Oh, watch it Vance, you may become the muggle version of a Death Eater with an attitude like that," he teased. Sirius never took threats seriously, they were just fun jokes to him. Even growing up with Bellatrix, he loved driving her nuts by not even being phased by her death threats. Narcissa didn't threaten him, but she insulted him plenty of times over the years. Of course, every one knew that he was on good terms with Andromeda. Him and Regulus, well they did not even speak any more.
"Well, it's good to know that you won't bother to actually hex me, Em. It lightens my day up by a million!" Words:

Emmeline was watching Sirius with a bored look on her face and a raised eyebrow. He was an idiot. Well really all boys were idiots, Sirius was just a bigger idiot than most. "It's like you don't even like men, you know?" Was part of what he said next, and Emmeline clapped sarcastically a few times. Wow, he had actually got it, without even realizing he had got it. He was just joking around, but the reality of it was, he had figured out why she didn't appear interested, because she really wasn't.
"Wow you're a genius," Her voice was as sarcastic as her clap and she dropped her hands to rest on the grass again, "After seven years of knowing me it finally gets through your thick skull that I'm not interested in men. You deserve a freakin' award." She rolled her brown eyes at him. It wasn't like Emmeline went around flaunting the fact that she liked girls, but she didn't hide it either. Someone who knew her as long as Sirius should have figured it out by now, especially since he was always being shot down by her. "Nah, this attitude it reserved solely for you and of course anyone who goes after my friends, the difference being I actually do hex them, but so glad I could make your day brighter." She twirled a few of her dark curls around her finger while watching him, not wanting to miss any of the looks on his face as he realized what an idiot he had been this whole time.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? Sirius' frown only grew more in confusion by what Emmeline said and her clapping. "You're, not interested...in men?" He asked with a confused voice that matched his face. How had he missed Emmeline not being interested in men? Well, he had spent the entire seven years flirting with Emmeline to truly notice any other people in her life. Even then, there was no chance that he could be that thick. What if she was just making it up for the sake of Sirius leaving her alone?
"Well, it's all about making others feel great, isn't it?" he responded. A smile grew in place of his confused frown. She like girls, "You like girls, eh?" He asked with an eager smile. Most people found liking the same sex as a big deal and not socially acceptable, Sirius knew that. He, personally, did not care. If girls wanted to kiss girls, he was one hundred percent fine with it. Now, as long as no boy attempted to snog him, he was a happy camper. "So, have you ever kissed a girl before?" he asked curiously, "Or has it always been admiring from afar?" He never did understand the whole taking interest in the same sex, it just never really occurred to him on a regular basis. Whenever the thought did occur to Sirius, he usually left it at being like him liking girls. Words:

Emmeline sighed and rolled over so she was lying on her back in the grass as she listened to Sirius. She put her hands behind her head and looked up at the clouds moving along in the bright blue sky. When she and her brother were little they had always looked for shapes in the clouds, but they hadn't done so since she had got her Hogwarts letter. "Yes Black, I do like girls," Emmeline said, she hadn't been sure of how he would react to that piece of news, considering he'd be flirting with her since they were eleven years old, but he seemed to be taking it fairly well. She blinked a few times, her eyelashes casting long shadows on her cheeks. She then sat up and shook her dark brown hair out. Running her fingers through it she listened to Sirius' question.
"I don't really see how that's any of your business," Emmeline said, "But if you really must know then yes I have kissed girls before. And there's something that you can relate to." Her sarcastic tone was back, though it was more teasing than rude. "What with all the girls chasing after you. And now that you know I'm not available, you can spend your time with one of them, where you might actually get somewhere." She smiled before adding in a whisper. "If you're really really lucky." But she didn't think he'd be able to hear that.

525,600 minutes 525,600 journeys to plan how do you measure, measure a year how about love? All Sirius could do was have a rather plotting smirk on his face. His fantasies were getting a bit out of control and farther and farther away from reality. The fact that Emmeline had no interest in him was a bit forgotten at this point. A good slap across the face could have fixed that; but for all he knew, that was Lily's job. Yes, just Lily's, surely Emmeline would not slap him. His brain seemed to slip from the fact that the two were best friends and rather similar in ways, poor Sirius.
"I can relate better than any one can imagine to kissing girls, Em. It's rather fun if you ask me, although you wouldn't really need to," he teased. He was rather curious if kissing a girl while being a girl was different from kissing a girl while being a boy. That might have to be something he kept to himself, Sirius was not completely dense, still he did wonder. "Oh don't worry, Em, I would of had a girl on my arm any ways. I might of even been planning to go for one out here, you know, besides you. A wise man always makes preparations for the worst, after all. Maybe someone like...that girl," he said, lazily pointing to a girl with darker hair that was up in one of those messy bun things, "She seems alright, not a Slytherin." Words:

Of course he could relate to kissing girls, this was Sirius Black. He had a reputation with the girls, and Em knew that he had earned it. He was a notorious flirt (as she herself had been subjected to that since first year. "No I suppose I wouldn't," She said, rolling her eyes at him. And then Sirius was talking about chasing down a different girl, other than her. "Well you'll have better luck than I would," She pointed out. "You may piss girls off, but you're a guy so you've got a better chance with all these girls than I do." Em was one of the few openly lesbian girls at Hogwarts. After all, if you were gay or lesbian, well you didn't tell anyone, and you certainly didn't act on it. That would be just scandalous, unspeakable. So while Em wasn't lying when she said she had kissed a girl before, it wasn't like there were many options of girls for her to kiss out there. Although there were a few that she knew of, like Fiona White. The Slytherin girl was an option for Em, one of the few, but it wasn't like she was going to pursue that. As nice as Fiona had been to her, the other girl was a pureblood and a Slytherin, and Em was a muggle born and a Gryffindor. So however nice Fiona was, it wasn't like that would happen anytime soon, or ever.
Sirius' next words snapped Em out of it. He pointed out a pretty girl, and mentioned that she wasn't a Slytherin. "Well that's good," The brunette said, trying to get her mind off of Fiona. "That means that if you're lucky she might just hex you, a Slytherin would curse you." Em laughed, thinking about how girls always seemed to be threatening to hex Sirius, and yet hardly any of them ever actually went through with their threats. A Slytherin would be sure to keep their promise, but they'd also be sure to use some of the nastiest spells in the books, unlike a girl in say Gryffindor, like Lily and Em. They would just hex Sirius with a semi-scary hex, nothing that would cause permanent damage, a Slytherin girl, well she'd be liable to pull some dark magic trick and leave Sirius dying in the hospital wing, and that just wouldn't be good for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
